Mercedes SLS Black Edition – A GT3 For The Street?

As if the monster power of the SLS AMG wasn’t enough, Mercedes have just announced a Black Edition based upon the GT3 race car, but for the road. The fifth in a line of Black Series cars that started in 2006 with the SLK55 AMG, this one promises a ‘faster and more emotional’ shift and response time from the seven speed sequential shigft. Lots and lots of carbon, a blade-like rear wing and bucket seats give the machine the suitable look.

Power is up from 571bhp in the ‘standard’ AMG to 631bhp. The most interesting part for me is that this is achieved by increasing the RPM to a maximum of 8,000rpm. Quite a height for 6.3 litre pistons to be climbing up to. Valvetrain is also uprated to cope with the RPM, plus of course, each engine is hand finished by AMG technicians and bears the name of the builder on the cam covers.

Is it worth the extra money? And would you have a screaming yellow paint scheme or something more conservative in the lines of the Black Edition ethos? Well you have time to decide, as the car won’t be available until 2013. For us, that engine specification alone might just make it worthy of the price. The price? Oh yes, well that hasn’t been announced yet….

If you love the sound of the Cosworth V8 as much as the V12 Merlin, the smell of Jet A1 as much as Castrol R and admire the late Ray Hanna as much as Sir Stirling, you’ll find you’re both on the same page. Neill's love of art deco buildings means that his ideal home would be a brilliant white, 1930′s control tower in Southern France, with crisply mown grass, biplane parked on the driveway and a Ferrari 288GTO in the garage. This is something that those around him tolerate, though it does concern them from time to time.
