Discussing the Porsche 911’s Alter Ego

The more casual Porsche viewer might be forgiven for being unaware of the company’s considerable success at rallying and off road racing. For the rest of us, we were brought up on images of Rothmans Porsche 911’s across the globe competing everywhere from the tight country lanes of Ireland to the vast open spaces of the Sahara. From Billy Coleman and Saeed al Hajeri (Sid Hedgerow to his fans) and the legend of Jackie Ickx, Rothmans Porsche won pretty much everywhere they turn their resources to.

In this video, seven-time Pikes Peak Champion Jeff Zwart discusses this alter ego of the Porsche 911 – Rallying and Off-Roading. Watch Jeff drive Pikes Peak in his hillclimb car and then drive the Porsche Museum’s rare Paris-Dakar winning Type 953, the All-Wheel-Drive 911 precursor to the 959.

If you love the sound of the Cosworth V8 as much as the V12 Merlin, the smell of Jet A1 as much as Castrol R and admire the late Ray Hanna as much as Sir Stirling, you’ll find you’re both on the same page. Neill's love of art deco buildings means that his ideal home would be a brilliant white, 1930′s control tower in Southern France, with crisply mown grass, biplane parked on the driveway and a Ferrari 288GTO in the garage. This is something that those around him tolerate, though it does concern them from time to time.
